The Future in Video Games

Updated: Apr 22, 2023

Detroit Becoming Human

So I was unsure how exactly I wanted to start my first blog or the direction I wanted to take when writing about video games and how to review them.

I had a couple of games in mind that I thought would be good to talk about but at the moment as I'm not playing a lot of games and currently being abroad, I still managed to find time to play a few, and one of those games that have played was Detroit: Becoming Human.

Now I have played this game years ago when it was released but I was having a very interesting conversation with my partner about the future and AI etc, and I had to bring up this incredible video game in conversation because it was on a similar topic that we were talking about.

Of course, with the very progressive and popular current state that is AI and what it is currently being used for with the likes of ChatGPT and AI-created artwork through MidJourney, I felt the urge to relive the amazing story of the game.

Now it wasn't me per se that was playing the game and more my partner making the choices throughout the game and knowing that there are multiple choices you can make I wanted to see how she would decide differently from me.

Choices

Now if you haven't played this game before I really encourage you do the story is absolutely fantastic and really makes you think about what kind of person you want to be and it gives us a look at a future that might possibly even become a reality.

Without giving too much away you play as 3 different androids in the year 2038, now I know what you are thinking that its not too far from our current year being only 15 years apart. But the main purpose of the game is to play through these characters' stories and make very intense decisions about the outcome of the future of the androids.

From very small choices like what to say in conversations with other characters to big ones like deciding to choose if a person should die or not, it's very compelling with the game only giving you a few seconds adding to that pressure to even make these kinds of choices that could affect the rest of the whole game for you.

I have written a paper on this very subject before for my dissertation in university based on a similar style of game called The Walking Dead: Telltale series and always found it interesting to see how other people may make different choices from me.

Difference

As we played through the game together I remembered how captivating the story can be. growing attached to the characters and always wanting to do what's right for them in difficult situations. We came close to the ending and my partner made a completely different choice to how she wanted the story to end.

But what was also very interesting to find out is that at the end of every chapter in the game, it always gave you a chance to see a roadmap of all the different choices you could have made and where that could have led you on a very different path. With even an added World stats feature that lets you see the percentage of the same choice people made as you. And then found it amusing when you were in the only 2% of people that made that kind of choice.

Future

With the way the world is currently going I found myself wondering that maybe one day in the future we would be living in a world alongside androids and what that would be like for humanity. Would the androids break free and want a life of their own and become alive? How would we react to that, would it be an exact replica of Detroid: Becoming Human, or would humankind not allow that to happen?

So I suppose this question to end my first blog and that is if one day we do create androids and they want to be free whose side will you be on?

What side will you be on?

  • Human

  • Android

Closing

Thank you so much if you made it this far and read my first blog, I'm hoping to keep this up as a weekly thing so if you have any suggestions or games you would like me to talk about leave a comment, and don't forget to give the post a like and share it.

I give Detroid: Becoming Human a rating of 9/10

Thanks
